Break bulk cargo or General cargo

In shipping, break bulk cargo or general cargo is a term that covers a great variety of goods that must be loaded individually, and not in intermodal containers nor in bulk as with oil or grain. Ships that carry this sort of cargo are often called general cargo ships. The term break bulk derives from the phrase breaking bulk — the extraction of a portion of the cargo of a ship or the beginning of the unloading process from the ship's holds. These goods may be in shipping containers (bags, boxes, crates, drums, barrels). Unit loads of items secured to a pallet or skid are also used.[1]

A break-in-bulk point is a place where goods are transferred from one mode of transport to another, for example the docks where goods transfer from ship to truck.

Break bulk was the most common form of cargo for most of the history of shipping. Since the late 1960s the volume of break bulk cargo has declined dramatically worldwide as containerization has grown. Moving cargo on and off ship in containers is much more efficient, allowing ships to spend less time in port. Break bulk cargo also suffered from greater theft and damage.

Bulk cargo is commodity cargo that is transported unpackaged in large quantities. This cargo are usually dropped or poured, with a spout or shovel bucket, as a liquid or as a mass of relatively small solids (e.g. grain, coal), into a bulk carrier ship's hold, railroad car, or tanker truck/trailer/semi-trailer body. Bulk cargo is classified as liquid or dry.

As of 2009 the largest bulk carrier cargo ship in the world is the 364,768 metric tons deadweight (DWT) iron ore carrier Berge Stahl.

The busiest bulk cargo port in the world is the New Orleans-area based Port of South Louisiana.

A reefer ship is a type of ship typically used to transport perishable commodities which require temperature-controlled transportation, mostly fruits, meat, fish, vegetables, dairy products and other foodstuffs.

โดยทั่วไปในหลายๆประเทศได้มีการกำหนดให้จดทะเบียน (Legislation) ประเภทและชนิดของสินค้าอันตราย เพื่อวัตถุประสงค์การขนส่งสินค้าประเภทนี้ด้วยปลอดภัย

การกำหนดกระทำด้วยการแบ่ง Class ซึ่งกำหนดตามขั้นตอนการปฏิบัติเกี่ยวกับสินค้าแต่ละประเภท โดยการกำหนดกฎ, ข้อบังคับ หรือกฎหมายต่างๆเข้ามากำกับ หรือจัดแบ่งตามลักษณะเฉพาะตัวของสินค้า (charisteristics) รวมทั้งขนาดและขอบเขตของอันตรายอันอาจจะเกิดขึ้นจากตัวสินค้านั้นๆ

การจดทะเบียนจะระบุรายละเอียดครอบคลุม Classification, Packaging, stowage (permissible proximity & positioning) ในระหว่างการบรรทุกและการขนส่ง

การปฏิบัติการและการบรรทุกสินค้าชนิดนี้ต้องดำเนินการตามข้อบังคับต่างๆอย่างเคร่งครัด ซึ่งโดยทั่วไปจะพิจารณาถึง

1/ ประเภทของยานพาหนะหรือเรือที่นำมาใช้ในการขนส่ง

2/ กฎข้อบังคับของประเทศต้นทาง

3/ กฎข้อบังคับของประเทศที่ขนส่งผ่านระหว่างทาง

4/ กฎข้อบังคับของประเทศปลายทาง

5/ กฎข้อบังคับของประเทศที่เรือลำนั้นแขวนธงอยู่ (flag carrying)

ข้อบังคับต่างๆกำหนดขึ้นตามข้อกำหนดซึ่งระบุไว้โดยเฉพาะใน SOLAS บทที่ 7 ซึ่งจะเน้นเรื่องความปลอดภัยและสุขภาพอนามัยของบุคคลที่เกี่ยวข้องในการปฏิบัติงานบนเรือ

สินค้าอันตรายทุกประเภทจะไม่สามารถทำการขนถ่ายได้ถ้าผู้รับ/ผู้ส่ง หรือตัวแทน ไม่ทำการแจ้งโดยเปิดเผยถึงรายละเอียดของสินค้าอันตรายนั้นๆ ซึ่งรายละเอียดที่จะต้องระบุได้แก่

1/ Technical name or Shipping name (by IMDG code)

2/ Description of goods with dangerous charisteristics

3/ Identity of goods

4/ UN number

5/ Class of goods

IMO ได้กำหนดรหัส(code)สำหรับสินค้าอันตรายทุกประเภทที่จะขนส่งโดยเรือ ซึ่งอ้างอิงจากรายงานของ UN Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods และ

แหล่งข้อมูลการลงทะเบียนสินค้าอันตรายขององค์กรอื่นๆ เช่น ADR, RID, IATA(road, rail, air).

IMDG code ได้รับการยอมรับในการนำมาอ้างอิงโดยแพร่หลายและถูกใช้ในการกำหนดกฎข้อบังคับในกฎหมายสำหรับบางประเทศ และใช้เป็นมาตรฐานในการติดต่อการค้าระหว่างบริษัทเรือและสมาคมการค้าระหว่างประเทศที่เกี่ยวข้อง

These are all oxidising agents other than organic peroxides. When substances burn in air, they combine with oxygen and so are said to have been oxidised. Other chemicals have a similar 'burning' effect and so are said to be oxidising agents. The largest group of these are the organic peroxides.

These are a particular class of oxidising agent. hey have all the normal hazards of oxidising agents (that is, they will cause a 'chemical urning'). In addition, they will often be explosive under certain conditions - especially, if they are allowed to dry out.
